About The Group

Background

Picture
The group was originally known as the Mid-Kent and Medway Buddhist Group and has been meeting regularly for nearly 40 years. The group then became known as Alokabodhi Buddhist Group before changing to Maidstone Buddhist Group.

We have evolved into a gathering of spiritual practitioners, committed not only to the study and practise of the Buddha-Dhamma, but also to developing spiritual friendship, something the Buddha said was of crucial importance on the spiritual Path.  We believe that spiritual friendship is a very important quality to cultivate, because it inspires, guides and supports us in our practise.

After a period of meditation and a Dhamma talk (live or taped) or reflection, we have an open discussion in order to clarify our views and further our understanding of the Dhamma. This forum also provides a spiritual support and strengthens our sense of spiritual friendship. We believe in the wisdom of the group by providing an opportunity for learning and sharing our experience in order to integrate the Buddha's teachings into our everyday
lives. We also invite guest speakers from time to time.  If you are interested in joining us or would like to know more please use the Contact Form.

We also offer practise days three times a year.  Buddhist events in the local area are often advertised on our Facebook Page.

All our activities are on a dana basis  i.e. they are offered free of charge out of a spirit of generosity, another key aspect of the Buddha's teaching.  However, as funds are necessary to enable meetings to continue, friends are invited to contribute towards the cost of room hire. Donations are gratefully accepted at the meetings or online via our Funding page.

We have a lively and committed team of people involved in the general organisation of the group. We welcome anyone in our group who attends on a regular basis to get involved in facilitating an evening or becoming part of the committee when a vacancy arises. Our belief is that offering a Dhamma talk helps one's knowledge grow and helps one grow in confidence.
We welcome anyone who wishes to get involved!
